Dave began his musical studies as a singer and oboist at age 9, but discovered his passion for jazz and the trumpet
when he was 13. After playing in the jazz ensembles at Boulder High School (Boulder, CO), he went on to pursue a Bachelor's in Music at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. While studying at Lehigh, he worked with renowned composer/trumpeter Bill Warfield, and was fortunate to have the opportunity to write arrangements featuring Bob Dorough, Jon Faddis, and The Yellowjackets.
Dave continued his studies in music at William Paterson University (Wayne, NJ), where he pursued a Master's in Jazz Arranging, studying composition with Rich DeRosa and Jim McNeely, and trumpet with Dave Rogers. While living on the East Coast, Dave had weekly gigs as a member of The Tony Gairo/Gary Rissmiller Jazz Orchestra and the Joe Elefante Big Band, and had the pleasure of playing with many first rate musicians, such as Hank Jones, Joe Mosello, Scott Reeves, Bruce Williams, Tia Fuller, Steve LaSpina, Marcus McLaurine, Clark Terry, Gary Smulyan, and Bill Mobley.
After studying at William Paterson, Dave moved to Denver, CO, where he currently resides. Since moving to Denver, he has performed with the Ninth and Lincoln Jazz Orchestra, John Akall's Ultraphonic Jazz Orchestra, The Tony Black Summit, Conjuntos Colores, Onda, as well as playing every Wednesday and Thursday night with Freddy Rodriguez and the Jazz Connection at Denver's oldest jazz club, El Chapultepec, and as the leader of the Dave Boswell Quartet/Quintet.
