Teaching Experience
Dave Boswell's strong commitment to educating and inspiring students began with his work as a member of the Lehigh University chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, a music service fraternity. With this organization he worked closely with local schools and taught group lessons to beginning trumpet students. While pursuing a M.M. in Jazz Arranging from William Paterson University (Wayne, NJ), Dave continued his passion for teaching as a clinician at Elefante Music and for the Count Basie Youth Jazz Orchestra.
Since moving to Colorado, Dave has conducted clinics at Nevin Platt Middle School, Cole Arts and Sciences Academy, and West High School, participated as an instructor in the Lewis-Palmer Middle School Summer Lessons Program, is the Trumpet Instructor for the Colorado School of Music in Golden, and teaches privately in the Boulder-Denver region. With experience teaching all ages and abilities, Dave is well prepared to work with any who desire to improve their technical abilities or simply to learn more about music, composition, or improvising.
Benefits of a Private Teacher
Why take private lessons?
- Every student is unique and requires focus on different aspects of their playing in order to progress steadily.
- Private lessons offer the chance to improve more rapidly and develop confidence more quickly with intensive, individual instruction.
- I work with students to develop a comprehensive plan to help them build strong fundamental musical skills.
- Through personalized instruction students are able to overcome their areas of weakness, replacing anxiety and self-doubt with confidence and joy in playing music.
Teaching Philosophy
- Learning music should be a fun and rewarding experience. I strive to present concepts to students in ways that they will easily understand, often using analogies to other non-musical activities which students enjoy.
- A good teacher is not only a mentor, but a friend. A warm and nurturing environment allows a student to receive constructive criticism without becoming discouraged.
- I believe the benefits of studying music extend beyond development as a musician. In the pursuit of mastery of a musical instrument, valuable life skills such as creativity, self-analysis, problem solving, responsibility, discipline, confidence, and poise are also cultivated.
